PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP

DIR/Floortime: A Play-based Approach to Occupational Therapy

As the number of children with developmental challenges increases, it is essential that occupational therapists continue to provide occupation-based intervention in pediatric settings.  DIR/Floortime is a comprehensive interdisciplinary framework tailored to the child’s unique strengths and challenges.  It considers the child’s developmental capacities, individual differences, and relationships with caregivers, and uses a child’s primary occupation—PLAY. The goal is to develop mastery of social, emotional, and intellectual capacities instead of rote skills and isolated behaviors.  As with the occupational therapy process, DIR/Floortime taps into the child’s emotions, internal motivation, and interests to integrate learning throughout the brain which is essential for the development of higher level cognitive functioning.  “Floortime” is the technique used by occupational therapists to follow the child’s lead, while scaffolding the activity demands, to move the child toward better mastery.  This model also emphasizes the importance of the caregiver-child relationship, and the holistic and transactional nature of working with families.  This six hour workshop describes basics of the DIR/Floortime model, the relationship and relevance to occupation therapy, and how participants can use concepts from this model to benefit their clients with developmental challenges such as autism spectrum and sensory processing disorders.
