Current Protocols in the Application of Physical Agent Modalities

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This program is designed to assist the practitioner with clinical reasoning skills and application techniques utilizing thermal and electrical modalities. An overview of musculoskeletal conditions and appropriate treatment intervention using modalities in conjunction with manual techniques will be explored. A variety of learning methods including oral, interactive, and hands on lab will allow the participant to optimize their learning experience. The combination of lecture, demonstration and significant amounts of lab practice, prepares the participant to apply the learned information and skills immediately upon their return to the practice setting. Participants are cautioned to practice physical agent modalities only within the scope of each participant's state licensure law. PLEASE NOTE: All physical agent modalities seminars carefully follow AOTA guidelines, and are designed specifically as "preparatory" courses toward Modalities Certification. Certification is controlled and mandated by each State individually. Therefore, each individual state has its own "Law and Rules" (or lack of regulation) regarding the use of physical agent modalities by occupational therapists. ARS or E.A.S.E. does not, in any way, claim that taking any one course, of any kind, fully meets all of the requirements of any state. Per each state's licensure laws, every therapist is responsible for knowing and following the "Laws and Rules" regulating the practice of occupational therapy in their individual State.

OBJECTIVES

  1.  Implement the principles of thermal and electrical modalities when forming therapeutic goals and intervention.
  2.  Establish a treatment algorithm to assist in the application of thermal and electrical modalities.
  3.  Define the short and long term effects of thermal and electrical modalities.
  4.  Document goals related to specific diagnosis.
  5.  Demonstrate accurate preparation and positioning of patients for selected modalities.
  6.  Educate the patient on the physiological effects of PAM's intervention as it relates to specific diagnosis.
  7.  Explain precautions and contraindications of electrical and thermal application with specific diagnostic groups.
  8.  Determine and employ clinical protocols for treatment of acute and chronic pain using appropriate modalities.
  9.  Utilize current protocol using electrical current in the treatment of wounds and edema.
  10.  Apply new information & skills upon return to the practice setting within the scope of each state's licensure law.
